Peter and Eric talk with friend of the show David Friedman on the way to the 2008 National Stuttering Association annual convention. We discuss our earliest memories of stuttering, covert stuttering and much more.



Then Peter, Eric and Joe talk with very special guests Lee Caggiano and Dr. Joseph Donaher. Lee is the director of FRIENDS: The National Association of Young People Who Stutter, the mother of a young man who stutters and a speech-language pathologist specializing in stuttering. Dr. Donaher is speech-language pathologist who is the Stuttering Program Coordinator at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

We received this podcast about stuttering, in Hindi, from in India. The podcast features members from the Samagra Speech Support group in Dehradun, India, Participants include Pawan, Jagdish, Vijay and Sachin (Jagdish was not able to be in the picture below).


The theme of their podcast was a general discussion on stammering (stuttering) moderated by Sachin. They discussed:
  • What do people, stammerers and non-stammerers alike,  think about stammering in general in India?
  • Why some people laugh/smile when someone stutters?
  • The role of acceptance.
  • The value of voluntary stuttering
  • What is the idea focus for people who stutter? - Leaving a good impression on listener or conveying information (Communication vs. Fluency)
The participants share their belief that stammering is a highly 'subjective' experience and therefore non-stammerers may have difficulty understanding the issue and associated feelings discussed. They also share their belief that there is a systematic and consistent process of 'denial' in society - The child and the parents both deny that there is a problem. Hence there is no attempt to seek treatment or help. Jagdish sites an example from his neighborhood. The participants end with a message for children and young people who stutter. Their message is: If Stutter you must relax and do it comfortably without struggle. "Haklao magar pyaar se."
