Petition: ASHA Needs to Actively Enforce its Code of Ethics (Ep. 205)

Download | Duration: 00:36:59

Peter Reitzes and Eric Jackson talk about stuttering and a petition that asks the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) to enforce its own, self imposed, Code of Ethics so that people who stutter and our families are better protected from unethical and misleading advertisements. The petition was published June 9, 2010. Within hours of going public, one of the websites mentioned in the petition was changed and one of the online advertisements mentioned in the petition was also changed. This is a fantastic start. But more signatures are needed! If you wish to sign the petition, please send an email to Peter Reitzes, MA CCC-SLP - preitzes@yahoo.com. Please include your name, affiliation and credentials exactly as you wish them to appear on the petition. By standing together, WE make a difference. Please read and sign the petition.

Read this great article about the petition published by the British Stammering Association.

Also during the show, we discuss an interesting advertisement (see above) by a speech-language pathologist who advertises specializing in "Fluency Reduction." We mention that in some cases, the term fluency is being used as a euphemism for stuttering. Click here to see a larger version of the advertisement.
