Presenter Bio — David Luterman, EdD, is a professor emeritus at Emerson College in Boston, MA, a fellow of the American Speech Language Hearing Association, Director of the Thayer Lindsey Family Centered Nursery for Hearing Impaired Children and author of many articles and books including his seminal work Counseling Persons with Communication Disorders and Their Families in is 5th edition.
CARYN HERRING, JOEL KORTE, and ROISIN MCMANUS (of the “Stuttertalk B Team”) discuss the various happenings in their lives and how it relates to stuttering. This (somehow) transitions into a discussion about Caryn’s stuttering during dates. Lastly, Joel talks about using stuttering management strategies at his new contract job.

Title: The Stigma of Stuttering
Learner Outcomes: At the conclusion of the program, the learner shall be able to:
Describe the conceptualizations of stigma as being both public and internalized.
Summarize the relevant research that supports the notion that people who stutter experience both public and self-stigma.
Identify different strategies that could be used by professionals to identify and potentially reduce public and self-stigma associated with stuttering.
Presenter Bio — Michael Boyle, Ph.D., CCC-SLP is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Oklahoma State University where he teaches graduate courses in fluency disorders and research methods. His research focuses on identifying factors that predict both resilience and coping and adjustment difficulties related to stuttering. Particular psychosocial variables of interest include stigma, bullying, and attribution. Dr. Boyle is also very interested in the development of interventions that address stigma reduction and improved well-being in individuals who stutter. More
Kevin Hartford joins Peter Reitzes to discuss how stuttering prevented him from being hired for jobs, but also propelled him to start his own small business and go on to achieve great success. Mr. Hartford is asked about a lifetime of speech therapy, starting his own small business and a recent article about him in the Wall Street Journal.
KEVIN HARTFORD is president of Alle-Kiski Industries in Leechberg PA, a successful machining and fabrication shop, with approximately 40 employees. Mr. Hartford is the father of two sons and is a person who stutters.
