Bob and Peter point out that parents often blame themselves for their child’s stuttering and often attach an event, such as falling off a bike, to the onset of stuttering. They urge professionals to respond to parents with empathy while explaining that vaccines are not the cause of stuttering.

Bob “the Expert” Quesal joins Peter Reitzes to discuss if speech-language pathologists (SLPs) should continue to evaluate and treat people who stutter. This is episode six in a series on the topic.

Dr. Quesalshares his huge disappointment in how the field of speech-language pathology trains SLPs to understand and treat stuttering. Dr. Quesal states, “The reason we are in the mess we are in right now is because ASHA has been involved”, “I have been appalled by the number of well educated SLPs who don’t understand stuttering at all” and “We can lobby ASHA until we are blue in the face, but ASHA has demonstrated over the last 30 years that they don’t care about stuttering – they don’t care about people who stutter.”

Bob and Peter agree that the scope of practice in speech-language pathology should be changed to exclude “general practitioners” from working with people who stutter until they achieve advanced training and certification in stuttering.

Robert Dellinger, M.S., CCC-SLP is a school-based speech-language pathologist in Raleigh, N.C., and a person who stutters. He works in an elementary school and consults with colleagues in complicated fluency disorders cases at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Rob is an active member of the National Stuttering Association chapter in Raleigh and contributes to the local Teens Who Stutter (TWST) group.

Pierre’s criticism stems, in part, from a StutterTalk interview with the NSA’s Chairman, Gerald Maguire, titled The Future of the National Stuttering Association. 

Bob, Joe and Peter discuss a number of topics including stuttering, acceptance, treatment, the search for a cure, eugenics, the role of the National Stuttering Association, Did I Stutter?, responses from people who stutter to Josh’s post and much more. In response to Josh’s post and to the work of Did I Stutter?, it is pointed out that the very folks preaching some version of “not about me without me” are perhaps in need of the very same reminder.
