ROBERT QUESAL, Ph.D., CCC-SLP is a professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Western Illinois University, a person who stutters, a board certified specialist in fluency disorders and a fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Title: The Stigma of Stuttering

Learner Outcomes: At the conclusion of the program, the learner shall be able to:

  1. Describe the conceptualizations of stigma as being both public and internalized.
  2. Summarize the relevant research that supports the notion that people who stutter experience both public and self-stigma.
  3. Identify different strategies that could be used by professionals to identify and potentially reduce public and self-stigma associated with stuttering.

Presenter Bio — Michael Boyle, Ph.D., CCC-SLP  is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Oklahoma State University where he teaches graduate courses in fluency disorders and research methods. His research focuses on identifying factors that predict both resilience and coping and adjustment difficulties related to stuttering. Particular psychosocial variables of interest include stigma, bullying, and attribution. Dr. Boyle is also very interested in the development of interventions that address stigma reduction and improved well-being in individuals who stutter. More

Kevin Hartford joins Peter Reitzes to discuss how stuttering prevented him from being hired for jobs, but also propelled him to start his own small business and go on to achieve great success. Mr. Hartford is asked about a lifetime of speech therapy, starting his own small business and a recent article about him in the Wall Street Journal.

KEVIN HARTFORD is president of Alle-Kiski Industries in Leechberg PA, a successful machining and fabrication shop, with approximately 40 employees. Mr. Hartford is the father of two sons and is a person who stutters.

StutterTalk receives many messages from listeners asking, “I stutter, what should I do?” While we can’t tell others what they should do, we can share what we have done to manage and face our stuttering.

In today’s episode, CARYN HERRING, ROISIN MCMANUS and JOEL KORTE of the StutterTalk B Team discuss what they have done and do to face stuttering. They discuss the individuality of stuttering, self-help and spending time with others who stutter. The B Team discuss how helpful they have found the Stuttering Foundation books to be and refer to the book Self-Therapy for the Stutterer as “gold.” The B Team also give big “plugs” to the National Stuttering Association (their local chapters and annual conference) and Stutter Social.

Rabbi Mark S. Glickman serves as rabbi of Congregation Kol Shalom on Bainbridge Island, WA and Congregation Kol Ami in Woodinville, WA. He is author of Sacred Treasure, the Cairo Genizah: The Amazing Discoveries of Forgotten Jewish History in an Egyptian Synagogue Attic, published by Jewish Lights. This year Rabbi Glickman’s second book, Burnt Pearls: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of the Nazi Jewish Library, is being published by the Jewish Publication Society. Rabbi Glickman was interviewed for the article Stuttering Clergy Spread the Word.

Title: ADHD and Stuttering

Objectives: At the conclusion of the program, the learner shall be able to:

  • Identify various ways in which Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can effect a child’s ability to communicate effectively.
  • Discuss the literature base regarding stuttering, disfluency and ADHD.
  • Describe intervention strategies based on specific speech patterns commonly demonstrated by children with ADHD.

Dr. Donaher was asked to analyze and discuss the disfluencies heard in this video featuring a 12 year old child with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Presenter Bio — Joseph Donaher, Ph.D., is the Academic and Research Program Director of the Center for Childhood Communication at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Donaher is an Assistant Professor of Otorhinolaryngology at The University of Pennsylvania. He is a Board Recognized Specialist in Fluency and Fluency Disorders (Board Certified Specialist-Fluency, or BCS-F) and the editor of Perspectives on Fluency and Fluency Disorders. Dr. Donaher is the chair of the Research and Publications Committee of The International Fluency Association. His clinical and research interests focus on the assessment and treatment of school-age children who stutter.More
